Corn from Field to Shelf: Harvest, Shell and Grit in One Line
Maize is the workhorse grain of small farms everywhere. But the gap between "harvested cob" and "sellable grain or grits" is where most smallholders leave money on the table. A farmer who sells cobs to a middleman captures maybe 30% of the crop value. A farmer who processes maize into grain or grits before selling captures 70–90% of that value.
1. Match the harvest machine to your acreage
| Scale | Machine | Daily throughput | Power |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1–3 ha, hand planting | Hand harvest + reaper or mini corn harvester | 0.5–1.5 ha/day | Petrol or small diesel |
| 3–10 ha | 4-row combine harvester | 2–4 ha/day | 45–75 hp diesel |
| Contractor | 4–6-row self-propelled combine | 4–8 ha/day | 100–150 hp |
Buy one class above your own acreage if neighbours contract you — maize harvests are simultaneous, and a machine that takes 12 days to do your own 5 ha plus two neighbours' 3 ha will get all the jobs. Late-season contracts simply do not exist.
2. The sheller that matches your grain moisture
Maize is shelled at two distinct moisture windows:
| Window | Moisture | Machine | What to watch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fresh, after harvest | 20–28% | Fresh corn thresher | Wet grain clogs dry-design shellers — use a model explicitly rated for fresh cob |
| Dried, 2–3 weeks later | 13–15% | Multi-functional thresher | Cleanest shelling, lowest breakage rate |
Fresh shelling gets grain dry within days if laid thinly on mats — it skips cob storage and risks of mold. Dry shelling gives cleaner grain but needs covered dry storage space before processing. Many small farms do both: shell the freshest 60% immediately, sun-dry the rest and shell later.
3. From grain to grits — the machine that keeps the line small
Sellable maize has three paths:
- Whole grain (animal feed or resale) — just shell and clean, no further machine needed. Lowest margin, fastest path.
- Corn flour — Disc mill turns grain to flour. Sells at a 40–60% premium to whole grain.
- Corn grits — Corn grits making machine breaks grain into 3–5 mm grits, separates germ and bran. Highest margin on small scale — sells to breakfast cereal and poultry feed blenders at 100%+ premium over whole grain.
The grits machine is the one we recommend as the step beyond shelling: it doubles the value of the same grain without doubling the equipment investment.
4. Profit math: same grain, different end-products
| End product | Yield per 1 t shelled maize | Typical price | Revenue |
|---|---|---|---|
| Whole grain (feed) | 1 t | $320 | $320 |
| Corn flour | 900 kg + 100 kg bran (feed) | $480 flour + $30 bran | $510 |
| Corn grits | 800 kg grits + 120 kg germ + 80 kg bran | $680 grits + $80 germ + $30 bran | $790 |
5. Pre-purchase checklist
- Harvest machine: rated width and combine capacity for your row spacing — a machine designed for 76 cm rows will not sit right on a 90 cm bed
- Sheller: damage rate below 2% on fresh maize at rated capacity — ask for a field demo on your own crop
- Grits machine: comes with at least three screen sizes (4, 5 and 6 mm grits) and a germ separator
- Voltage and phase match: most shellers up to 1.5 t/h run single-phase 220 V; three-phase 380 V needed above that
- Spare parts: screens, belts and beating teeth stocked separately — a $20 belt downtime costs more than the belt itself
FAQ
- Can one thresher handle fresh maize, dry maize and sorghum?
- Yes — our multi-functional threshers with adjustable drum speed and interchangeable screens handle maize, sorghum, millet, wheat and soybean. Confirm fresh-cob rating with the supplier, as some units are dry-only.
- Is a combine harvester worth it for 5 hectares?
- Only if you will also harvest for neighbours. Running one on your own 5 ha means it sits idle 95% of the time. Hiring a contractor per hectare is cheaper below about 30 ha of combined maize per year.
- How long does fresh maize sheller keep?
- Store 2–3 weeks shelled at 13–15% moisture, spread on mats in a covered area. Do not bag fresh shelling — it will mold in 2–3 days inside the bag.
- What machine do I need to make "pos" grits or breakfast grits?
- A corn grits machine with a 3–4 mm screen and germ separator. The separator is what lifts the oil-rich germ out of the grits — customers pay more for de-germed grits because they keep longer and taste cleaner.
- What warranty and support come with export orders?
- 12 months warranty with lifetime spare parts supply is our standard; we guide screen and belt replacement by video call within 24 hours.
